Poetry : Modern Simony
63Simony Defined
"The sale of spiritual authority: the sale of tithes, the taking of a fee for confession, absolution..." (As referred to by this poem's title.)
I get lost sometimes
when I’m walking through
the parking lot of some
over-sized department store.
They save souls at those places
(if salvation is a box
of cocktail weenies and a cheap VCR).
It’s nice when you see
shit like that.
When you’ve been saved;
and everyone you’ve ever wronged
forgives you for your shortcomings.
Don’t forget to give some change
to the ringing bell.
His god blesses you.
Salvation for sale,
a dime a dozen.
No profanity in your music.
Censorship to make a cleaner world,
a plastic, cellophane wrapped world.
Jingle jingle jingle jingle.
“Money for the poor?”
Clink clink clink clink.
Nickels fall on iron, painted red.
“Money for the poor?”
Rifles for deer.
Rods for fish.
Knives for gutting.
Toys for your children.
Bouncy-Wouncy Tigger
And Roo.
Honey-Eating Pooh.
Slugs for those bears.
Insecticide for bees.
Give your children dreams.
The destroy their reality.
Lookout for falling prices,
and IQs.
Jingle jingle jingle jingle.
Salvation for sale
at your local
Wal-Mart Superstore.

Reading poetry is so enjoyable when there's a little society protest thrown in there. :) Good poem. Thanks for sharing.
